Jennifer Hudson stood again in the Cook County medical examiner’s office Monday afternoon, clutching the hands of loved ones as they identified the body of yet another slain relative—her 7-year-old nephew, Julian.
Even before family members arrived at the morgue, they had been told that the three-day search for the 2nd grader had ended when his body was found slumped in the back seat of an SUV parked on a West Side street. Amid visibly shaken family members in the medical examiner’s office, Hudson bowed her head as if in prayer, then looked up.
“Yes, that’s him,” she told medical examiner officials as the family stood with her in an adjoining room and looked at a video monitor showing the boy’s face.
The toll was inescapable: The Oscar-winning actress had lost her mother, her brother and now her nephew to a murderous rampage.
Officers questioned William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Julian’s mother, Friday night, but he stopped talking when police suggested he take a polygraph test, law-enforcement sources said. Balfour has not been charged in the slayings.
Although the sources say Balfour remains the focus of the investigation, the motive remains murky. Police say there have been ongoing disputes between him and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family.
Hudson’s mother and brother had thrown him out of their Englewood house in the past, sources said. Julia Hudson also told police that Balfour had threatened the family. A source said Balfour told Julia Hudson he would kill her if he found out she had a boyfriend, despite the fact that he had other girlfriends.
In another incident, sources said, Julia Hudson arrived Friday morning at Sunrise Bus Co. on payday and discovered her wages had been garnished because of unpaid car payments. Sources said Balfour had taken her car months earlier but promised to make the payments on the vehicle. After seeing her pay stub, Julia Hudson called Balfour to complain about the unpaid bills, sources said.
Police believe that Balfour went to the Hudson family home Friday and shot through the front door, striking Hudson’s brother, Jason. Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, came into the living room, screaming, and Balfour shot her as well, sources said. Shell casings were also found in the child’s room, but there were no bullet holes or other signs of violence there. Much of the account of what police believe happened that day came from an interview with a girlfriend of Balfour’s, sources said.
The sources also said Balfour’s girlfriend contradicted his alibi and told police that he was involved in the slayings.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person was involved, though Supt. Jody Weis said Monday that Balfour was currently their only “person of interest.”
On Sunday morning, officials transferred Balfour to Stateville Correctional Center, saying that because he was a suspect in the slayings, he violated conditions of parole for a 1999 conviction for attempted murder.
Over the weekend, the city scoured the area near the first shooting scene and a grid east of where the boy eventually was found. Officers and volunteers taped missing-person posters up in area shops, and vigils were held in Englewood.
But Julian was found Monday morning on the West Side after a tiny dog named Li’l Man howled and barked at an unfamiliar white SUV parked in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue.
The Chihuahua’s reaction drew the attention of his owner, John Louden. The SUV matched the description of one police had sought in the killings since Friday. It remains unclear if police had canvassed the block, but some neighbors say they had seen the SUV since Friday. But no one called police before Monday.
Louden, 75, went inside and told his wife, Lynnette. Neighbors said the pace of drug dealing nearby often brought strange cars to the block. But when the Loudens saw the Suburban’s license-plate number appear on television, Lynnette Louden called 911.
“The first thing I thought was,” she said, ” ‘Lord, don’t let the baby be in there.’ “
But he was.
Julian was found slumped over in the back seat of the Suburban, shot in the head. A bullet was found lodged in the vehicle, leading detectives to believe he had been shot in the vehicle. Police don’t know precisely when he was killed, saying they are waiting for more information from the medical examiner’s office. Police are hoping to find physical evidence at the two crime scenes that breaks the case.
A prayer service was held for the three slain family members in Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church, where one of Hudson’s cousins is a minister.
And on the block where the shootings happened near 70th Street and Yale Avenue, about 100 friends and strangers gathered for a candlelight vigil of song and prayer Monday evening.
Surrounded by stuffed animals, balloons and posters that had grown throughout the day, the crowd sang Jennifer Hudson’s song “Spotlight.”

CHICAGO - A top FBI official said Monday that a body found in an SUV is believed to be that of Jennifer Hudson’s missing 7-year-old nephew, the focus of a desperate search since the Oscar winner’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their home three days earlier.
While the body has not been positively identified, FBI Deputy Director John S. Pistole said authorities believe it to be that of Julian King, who also lived in the home.
Chicago police said the body of a black male child was found shortly after 7 a.m. in the rear seat of an SUV. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.
The SUV was found parked on the street in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings, and matched the one sought in an Amber Alert issued after Hudson’s mother and brother were found slain Friday, police Cmdr. Wayne Gulliford said.
In Washington, Pistole said at a news conference on child exploitation that authorities found a body “who we believe to be the missing victim in Chicago, the nephew of Jennifer Hudson. We are working with Chicago police to get a positive identification of the victim.”
Hudson had offered $100,000 Sunday for information leading to Julian’s safe return. He is the son of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia Hudson. Telephone and e-mail messages left Monday for Hudson’s publicist, who had been releasing statements on behalf of the family, were not answered.
Chicago police have characterized the killings as “domestic related” and have been questioning William Balfour, who is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson and is being held in state custody on a parole violation. Balfour is not the boy’s father and has not been charged in the slayings.
Balfour, 27, was taken into custody Friday by Chicago police for questioning in the killings. On Sunday, he was transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections “based on his active parole violation unrelated to this investigation.”
Records from the Corrections Department show Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.
Balfour’s mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson’s mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.
Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith said Balfour would probably remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case. She would not say where Balfour was being held, and it was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.
Hudson, who won an Academy Award in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls,” was in Chicago during the weekend. The medical examiner’s office confirmed Hudson, 27, identified the bodies of her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson. The deaths were ruled homicides.
Neighbors and well-wishers brought stuffed animals and other items to a makeshift memorial outside Donerson’s two-story white clapboard home as news of Monday’s discovery spread.
“Everybody knows Jennifer Hudson, but I would be here even if it was little Suzy on the corner,” said Tacara Juarez, 26, who doesn’t know the family but lives in the neighborhood.
On Sunday, Hudson appealed to the public for help, offering the reward and asking any information be given to Chicago police.
“Jennifer and her family appreciate the enormous amount of love, support and prayers they have received while she and her family try to cope with this tragedy and continue the search for Julian,” said a statement from her publicist.

New in Jennifer Hudson case: Boy’s body found in missing Chevy Suburban
- 11:12 AM CDT, October 27, 2008
A boy’s body was found in the vehicle police were looking for in their search for 7-year-old Julian King, the missing nephew of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson. The 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859 was found in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue around 8 a.m. (CLTV video / October 27, 2008)
Investigators were working today to identify the body of a child found in a truck on Chicago’s West Side, while family members of Oscar-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson assumed the worst–that this was her missing nephew–and organized a noon church vigil.
The body was found in the white Chevrolet Suburban that police were looking for in their search for 7-year-old Julian King.
The Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859 was found in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue around 8 a.m. after police received a call of a suspicious vehicle. The SUV was towed away for evidence processing. Neighbors disputed how long it had been there. A resident of the block, LaShaun Bouie, 36, said it must have appeared after 3 a.m. Monday morning. Rasheem Jackson, 21, who lives a block away, thinks he remembers seeing it as early as Saturday. Police received a call for a suspicious car at 7 a.m.
If the boy is identified as Julian King, it will confirm detectives’ worst fears because a law enforcement source said bullet casings were found in the boy’s room on Friday. But the source said they had not found other evidence of violence in the room.
As the car was processed by evidence technicians and workers at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office sought to identify the body, Hudson’s family members and supporters assumed this was the third member of her family killed since Friday.
“It’s shocking. It’s unreal. We had been praying that it would not come to this,” said Rev. Krista Alston, a cousin of Hudson and a minister at the Pleasant Gift Baptist Church in Chicago. “We know it’s a reality now, but it’s still shocking.”
Police found the bodies of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, on Friday afternoon after a family member came to their home in the 7000 block of South Yale Avenue and saw signs of violence inside.
The murders and realization that 7-year-old Julian King was missing sparked a search for the boy and a manhunt for William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of the boy’s mother, Julia Hudson.
Balfour was brought in for questioning Friday night.
The boy remained missing through a long weekend in which police and volunteers posted fliers around the city with pictures of the boy. On Sunday, his actress aunt–grieving and rushing to Chicago from Florida where she was promoting a film–offering a $100,000 reward to anyone who found the boy.
Hudson, who gained stardom after appearing on “American Idol,” and then won an Academy Award for the movie “Dreamgirls,” spent the days since the murders out of the public eye but high in public consciousness.
A parade of cars moved slowly past her family’s home Monday morning, squeezing past news vans and a gathering crowd of reporters. Neighbors came by to drop items on the memorial or simply came to stand quietly and reflect on the violence that is too often apart of the neighborhood.
“Everybody is sick of going through stuff like this,” said Artisha West, who did not know the Hudson family but used to live in the area. “We all have to stick together. All these young children are dying, and for what?”
In front of the Hudson’s home, men in heavy jackets and hooded sweatshirts came to kiss the twin white crosses baring the names of Jennifer Hudson’s mother Darnell Donerson and brother Jason Hudson.
Chicago police have been interviewing Balfour. He was initially described by police as a suspect in the investigation.
Police searched Balfour’s girlfriend’s house for several hours Friday night after taking him into custody. Her home is located about 2.5 miles from where the SUV was found this morning.
Balfour has denied involvement in the killings or the disappearance of the boy, law-enforcement sources said. But at some point, Balfour stopped talking to authorities, sources told the Tribune.
On Sunday morning, Balfour was transferred to a state facility after officials said he violated conditions of parole for a 1999 conviction for attempted murder. On Sunday, Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith said Balfour violated his parole because he is a suspect in the slayings and the boy’s disappearance.
According to law-enforcement sources, Balfour’s alibi the day of the killings has been contradicted by his girlfriend.
Balfour and Julia Hudson had been separated for some time, his family members said. A family friend said Balfour recently had threatened to take Julian away.
A family member of the girlfriend’s said police have interviewed her. Police also tracked Balfour’s whereabouts Friday through his cell phone, sources said.
As pieces began coming together in the police investigation, the Hudson family spent the weekend praying, holding out hope until the minute reports said the boy’s body was found in Jason Hudson’s car.
Now, the family said, a vigil is planned at the Pleasant Gift Baptist Church at noon.
“All we can do is pray,” Alston said. “We’re a family of deep faith.”

Police are questioning a suspect in the killings of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother, according to published reports, and are searching for a boy missing from the scene.
Authorities reportedly are questioning William Balfour in connection with the shooting deaths.

Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother Jason Hudson were found slain Friday in their home on Chicago’s South Side, according to police. An Amber Alert has been issued for Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew Julian King.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, William Balfour, 27, has been taken into custody.
On his MySpace page, Balfour says he is married to Jennifer Hudson’s sister Julia Hudson and has a stepson.
Jennifer Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2006 for her portrayal of Effie in the film version of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.” She competed on the third season of “American Idol” in 2004, making it to the top seven contestants before being eliminated from the contest.
The Associated Press reports that Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.
Julian, the missing boy, is 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. He was wearing a brown polo shirt with stripes and khaki pants when last seen, authorities said in the Amber Alert.
A 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban usually at the house was also gone, authorities said at an evening news conference.
The Amber Alert said Julian, who police said was Donerson’s grandson, could also be the Suburban or in a teal or green Chrysler Concorde with a temporary license plate, a left front headlight hanging out and scratches on the left side.
Deputy Police Chief Joseph Patterson said the bodies were found about 3 p.m. Friday, when a relative arrived home and found Donerson shot to death on the living room floor.
The relative backed out of the house and called police, who found Jason Hudson shot to death in a bedroom, Patterson said.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots earlier Friday, he said. Authorities found no signs of forced entry to the home and are not sure whether other items are missing.
Hudson’s representatives would not disclose her whereabouts Friday, but Willie Davis, pastor of Progressive Baptist Church, told CNN affiliate CLTV that she is on her way back to Chicago.
Davis said he was notified that he might be called out to assist Hudson and her family members.

Now that D Woods and Aubrey O’Day were fired from Danity Kane it seemed odd for the group to have only 3 members. We have an EXTREMELY RELIABLE source that claims that Danity Kane won’t be a trio for long.According to our snitch R&B singer Cassie is set to step in as the new “lead” singer of Bad Boy’s top female group Danity Kane. “Expect the announcement before the end of the year.”
Wow … Cassie, huh. And it couldn’t have anuthing to do with the fact that she’s been getting it in with Diddy for nearly a year now does it…?????
